![]() Your Podthinker admits that he’s come to enjoy it much more than he ever expected to, though not quite enough to code expressly No Agenda-themed web apps like some of the true devotees have. With this barely-describable yet surprisingly entertaining mixture of qualities, No Agenda has gathered a sizeable and, more important, impressively devoted following. One segment of the intro, for example, introduces “Crackpot and The Buzzkill in the Morning”, and Curry lets fly with the series of sound clips he’s rigged up whenever he or Dvorak says something particularly morning zoo-y. The show is streamed during recording before it’s podcasted, and Curry uses this close-enough resemblance to terrestrial broadcasting to poke a good deal of fun at it. Perhaps the least resistible element of the program - for your Podthinker, anyway - is its satire of that quintessential fish in a barrel, commercial radio. Still, Curry and Dvorak have time for more general global geopolitical topics as well as personal-scale stuff, like whether one should order Cliff Richard’s wine while vacationing in Portugal. (For a figure so central to the last couple decades of technology culture, he also seems to have odd technological habits: refusing to use headphones while recording, for instance.)Īn accurate encapsulation of No Agenda‘s topical range proves elusive suffice it to say that the show’s recent overarching preoccupation appears to be, broadly speaking, surveillance and information security. (The “New World Order” is his pet theme.) Dvorak, nicknamed “The Buzzkill”, alternately looks askance at (some of) Curry’s wilder conjectures about the global power structure and grumbles about such ultra-curmudgeonly topics as how kids don’t have paper routes these days. When not tinkering with internet stuff or piloting around the world with his 60-year-old Dutch pop star wife and teenage daughter in tow, Curry, nicknamed “Crackpot”, weaves elaborate conspiracy theories out of information triangulated from, say, a sketchy Russian newspaper, three seconds of CCTV footage and a panicked call-in on Muskogee AM talk radio. While - let’s admit it - most podcasters are eccentrics, a refreshingly different set of eccentricities afflict Curry and Dvorak. It also helps that, as the first paragraph may have hinted, these aren’t your garden-variety podcasters. Whether this will be any given listener’s thing seems a roll of the dice, but Curry and Dvorak’s conversation darts in so many direction that it’s almost difficult not to find something compelling in it. Two-dudes-chatting, a format as basic as they come, is how No Agenda started out, but over time and with the aid of Curry’s persistent internet gearheadedness it has evolved into a streaming, intercontinental, parodic, paranoid extravaganza. The result is a program that on some level resembles a thousand other podcasts out there, but on others isn’t like anything else at all. One host happens to be podcasting entrepeneur and former VJ Adam Curry the other happens to be tech pundit John C. The hosts reside neither in their twenties or thirties but in their forties and fifties, and if we’re talking about literal residences, they broadcast not from Mom’s basement but from their palatial manors in London, San Francisco and Port Angeles. It’s a show where two white guys bullshit about the culture, yet it’s not exactly an according-to-Hoyle TTWGBAC. The best descriptor for this podcast is unlikely.

Many games for learning programming are available online (Franković et al. By visualizing algorithms or facing students-players with various challenges, such games encourage good programming practices (Giannakoulas and Xinogalos 2018). When it comes to acquiring programming skills, students can learn programming concepts and constructs through playing games (Shabalina et al. This approach should be used already from primary and lower secondary education since at that age many students lose interest in computer science and STEM (Chavatzia 2017). One approach is to try to make computer science, STEM, and fields related to the ICT attractive to boys and girls using digital educational games (De Carvalho et al. Therefore, interventions to address this problem at the global level are needed to ensure sustainable economic growth. Also, there is only 18% of females among university graduates in computer science in the US (Cunningham et al. There is only 17% of females among ICT specialists and 34% of females among STEM graduates (European Commission 2019). ![]() Another global problem is the gender gap in computer science education and careers. Despite advances in the use of methods and tools for teaching programming, there is still a lack of skilled ICT workers as well as a gap between the skills that students acquire through formal education and skills needed by industry (European Commission 2010). Teaching programming in primary and lower secondary education is considered as one of the major factors for promoting continuing education in these fields among students (Wong et al. Using these tools, teachers and researchers try to motivate students for the acquisition of programming skills but also to encourage some of them to choose computer science and ICT for their future careers. Using these tools, students create programs by manipulating graphical elements (blocks) instead of writing text commands and can easily create interactive stories and games, which positively affects their motivation and engagement in learning activities involving programming (Lau 2018), (Holenko Dlab et al. To encourage learning programming from an early age, specialized visual tools and programming languages such as Scratch (Scratch 2020), Snap! (Snap! 2020), and Alice (Alice 2020) have been developed. Therefore, various innovative methodologies, including game-based learning (GBL), are used in teaching (Topalli and Cagiltay 2018), (Shabalina et al. Introducing programming concepts and enhancing the development of programming skills in an appropriate manner is a challenge at all levels of education. ![]() Teachers and experts consider this approach as a relevant and effective method for achieving learning objectives related to programming, applicable and suitable for lower secondary students (11–15 year olds). The results showed that students accepted the C4G methodology and were motivated to learn how to program by developing games for solving real-world problems. In-service and pre-service teachers organized learning activities for students based on the C4G learning scenarios, which include the development of games in the programming language Snap! with topics that are interesting for both boys and girls and which involve solving real-world problems. This paper presents the results of a study with a mixed-gender group of both boys and girls ( N = 773) carried out with the aim of examining the effectiveness of the C4G development-based learning approach in lower secondary education in Croatia. Using the C4G game development-based learning methodology, students develop serious games for which they need to learn specific programming concepts. A European initiative CODING4GIRLS (C4G) promotes the acquisition of programming skills through a game development process with the aim of preparing young learners, especially girls, to enter computer science careers and raising awareness of the relationship between ICT and the real world. ![]() The chairman commands no troops and is not formally in the chain of command. Summer Meltdown’s not exactly cheap, with weekend passes running at $202.50 (fees included), but considering that it’s a four-day event, it’s not obscene. Furthermore, it’s a festival with truly grassroots origins, and thereby developed organically, free of much of the overbearing corporate influence that permeates many events these days. GRiZ, STS9, Greensky Bluegrass, Jade Cicada, Lettuce, Opiuo, Cory Wong, Brass Against, Champagne Drip, Dirtwire, High Step S. Festivities will take place on July 28 through 31 at Sky Meadows Park in Snohomish, Wash. Electric Zoo, Moonrise Festival, Summer Meltdown, and Dancefestopia 2016. Summer Meltdown has shared its artist lineup for The Evergreen State music event. Situated in the Whitehorse Mountain Amphitheater an hour-and-a-half northeast of Seattle, it’s an often overlooked local gem. GRiZ has been reinventing and deconstructing contemporary electronic dance. However, while the lineup is a unique and excellent one, a great deal of Summer Meltdown’s appeal lies in its location and relatively unique festival culture. It’s a four-day festival from August 6 through August 9, and features Tycho, STS9, Phutureprimitive, Slow Magic, and many more. Fortunately, Summer Meltdown is there to fill that role for those of us unable to attend Shambhala this August. There will be a melt down of epic proportions. if they lose to us on Saturday there better be a bunch of fans with the suicide hotline on speed dial. But Shambhala’s all the way in Canada, and let’s face it while pop punk is on the way back into the mainstream, it’s not the early 2000s anymore. Buy and sell your Summer Meltdown Music Festival concert. After a wildly successful first year proving guided excursions from the festival grounds, river rafting, horseback riding, and rock climbing companies will return to Summer Meltdown. Summer Meltdown Music Festival tickets for the upcoming concert tour are on sale at StubHub. There’s the Northwest dance music mecca, Shambhala, and if you’re more into pop-punk and post-hardcore, Vans Warped Tour has you covered (Diplo’s bizarre Mad Decent protégé, Riff Raff, will be performing at Warped Tour as well - which should be entertaining, at the very least). The 16th annual Summer Meltdown Festival has unveiled a tempting initial lineup that places this music, camping and adventure festival on a level with the best of the northwest. The second weekend of August 2015 is one of the most music-saturated moments of the entire summer. Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory, and this really fired up the public’s imagination. Supposedly, the word “sex” in the ice cubes of an ad for gin, labia in the frosting of a cake mix ad, or images of erect penises were not consciously perceived but would ‘stimulate’ people to buy the advertised product. It claimed that unethical advertisers were routinely embedding subliminal messages and sexual imagery into ads in the service of selling products. The subliminal advertising myth persisted in the public mind, and was given new life when an opportunistic fellow named Wilson Bryan Key popped up in 1973 with a book called Subliminal Seduction. Some critics were doubtful that the experiment had even been conducted in the first place. Under pressure to produce documentation of his scientific methodology and replicate his results, Vicary changed his story repeatedly, and eventually admitted that he’d fabricated the test results. However, the FCC said that knowingly airing it is against the public interest, and it could result in problems for broadcast stations at license renewal time. As ad industry publication Printer’s Ink described it, “Having gone to see something that is not supposed to be seen, and having not seen it, as forecast, seemed satisfied.” One senator even quipped “I think I want a hot dog.” As a result, subliminal advertising was not ruled illegal in the United States. In January 1958, a demonstration of subliminal advertising was held for the Federal Communications Commission and members of Congress, where that “Eat Popcorn” message was flashed at five second intervals during a TV program. ![]() This was the era of paranoia about UFOs, Communism and brainwashing, so it really caught the public imagination…and the attention of the government Imagine: unethical advertisers could plant subliminal messages in consumers’ minds and trick them into purchasing products that didn’t want or need. It tied in nicely with the recently published book, Hidden Persuaders, where Vance Packard described the ‘secret powers’ of advertisers to manipulate consumers. This led to a flurry of headlines and a lot of consulting income for Vicary. Vicary claimed that sales of popcorn and Coke went up 57.5% and 18.1% respectively. During a viewing of the film Picnic, he claimed to have flashed messages saying “Drink Coca-Cola” and “Hungry? Eat Popcorn” on the screen for 1/3000 of a second at a time, far below the threshold of conscious perception by the audience. It all started in the summer of 1957, when an unsuccessful market researcher named James Vicary announced that he had conducted a “scientific test” at a movie theater in Fort Lee, New Jersey. The 4A’s Marsha Appel looks at the rise and fall of the greatest advertising myth of the 20 th century. If you work in advertising, chances are that someone outside the industry has asked you about subliminal advertising. |
